THANEKAR CIVIC, BADLAPUR

The design brief was to design a low-income group housing at Ambernath-Badlapur road for around 700 families. The site is irregular in shape with heavy contours of 18ft depth and a site area of around 4.5 acres.

The idea was to re-engage modern development with the tradition of Indian architecture and urban form. Therefore, the buildings were consciously placed on the outer periphery with a central open space. The role of such open spaces is not just limited to aesthetics and recreation purposes but it is essential to the supply of lighting and ventilation of every apartment.

‘The primary benefit of this typology is the sense of enclosure given to the residents of the complex because of the inward form. This central space becomes the principle organizer of the space with all the social activities oriented towards it’. It was a genuine attempt to cater to more than the basic residential requirements, providing an ambience that facilitates tranquility.
